‘Til Shiloh [Expanded] $11.99 1993′s Voice of Jamaica was a stellar set, an aural collage of the island, with its swirl of diverse styles, sounds and themes. Bringing dancehall to the wider world, that album was a revelation, and to attempt to better it would have been futile. And so, Buju Banton didn’t try, instead he moved in a new direction. After the completion of Voice of Jamaica, two of the Banton’s friends were killed; their murders prompting him to re-evaluate his own life, leading to his conversion to Rastafarianism, and bringing to an end his glorification of the gun. These life-changing events are reflected throughout much of ‘Til Shiloh, which proves a much more introspective set than anything heard from Banton before. This is most evident on the haunting sufferer’s song “Untold Stories,” as Banton reflects on the world around him, beautifully accompanied by a gentle rhythm and Glen Browne’s evocative acoustic guitar. But Jah now sustains him, prompting the artist to open the album with the brief a cappella psalm, “Shiloh,” then launching into “Til I’m Laid to Rest,” which revisits the sufferer’s theme, but intertwines it with an homage to Africa and his faith in the promised land. Still, Banton has not yet found peace, and his inner turmoil is at its rawest on “Murderer.” Written in the aftermath of the aforementioned killings, the Banton struggles with his grief and fierce desire for vengeance; all else pales before this most emotionally powerful of songs. It’s “Not an Easy Road,” as Banton vividly relates on that song, and he has been left vulnerable. Still, he opens his soul on “Wanna Be Loved,” and exposes his loneliness on “What Ya Gonna Do” joined by Wayne Wonder. “Complaint” has Banton toasting over this fabulous Garnett Silk number, praising Jah and scattering the heathens before him. “Chuck It So” takes a similar stance, as Banton takes on a Big Man, with the 2 Friends Crew sweetening his ferocious assault. It’s a heavy-hitting album, with only “Hush … |

…Tick…Tick…Tick $15.98 Songwriter Steve Wynn, the former Dream Syndicate frontman, has been on a tear since 1996 when he offered Melting in the Dark. Since then, his records have featured howling, wailing rock & roll and deep, dark acoustic reflections — all of them bearing his trademark noir-ish lyrics that offer the shadowy side of life, love, and violence. He’s employed a variety of musicians, and they’ve always sounded like hired guns. On …Tick…Tick…Tick he’s got himself a real band. They’re all younger than he is, and they have the hunger it takes to really execute Wynn’s unique songs. Start with drummer Linda Pitmon, who acts as co-producer (along with Wynn and Craig Schumacher) on these sides. Add to this the fact that the entire band (including Dave DeCastro on bass and guitarist Jason Victor) plots the arrangements. Wynn’s willful loss of total control has benefited him in spades. The set jumps out of the gate howling with “Wired,” where it sounds as if Wynn is singing through a megaphone. It’s followed by the creepy rocker “Cindy, It Was Always You,” co-written with ? ber hard-boiled crime fiction novelist George Pelecanos. On “Killing Me,” Wynn employs Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” guitar riff and mutates it into something utterly unhinged. The shuffle gets moved into overdrive as Victor makes his guitar scream, roar, and squeal while Wynn holds down the rhythm and overdubs a distorted slide. It’s followed by a seemingly simple ballad entitled “The Deep End,” which rises in drama to the breaking point about two thirds of the way through. It’s full of a kind of emptiness and questioning about the experience of loss; it expresses fear at the ensuing emptiness and the apprehension of being in this space. DeCastro’s bass enters about a minute in, and propels the guitars as Pitmon accents every line as if it were the gospel truth — and for the singer, it is. The swirling beauty that rises in the middle of the track transforms the protagonist’s voice, as if by … |

10 Days Out (Blues from the Backroads) $24.98 10 Days Out may well be Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s most important and intriguing album, even though the guitarist is hardly the featured artist on any of these tracks, working instead more as a sideman and facilitator for the impressive cast of venerable blues players who get a chance to shine here. Make no mistake about it, this recording belongs to such senior citizens as Henry Townsend, Etta Baker, Pinetop Perkins, and Henry Gray, and Shepherd’s presence (and the presence of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton) simply helps to focus the attention on these veteran blues players. Shepherd embarked on a ten-day journey into the American South in 2004 with a documentary film crew, a portable recording studio, and Double Trouble as a house band in an effort to catch the blues in its natural habitat of living rooms, kitchens, porches, back yards, and local watering holes, and the performances that resulted are priceless. Here is one-armed harp player Neal Pattman and blind guitarist Cootie Stark turning in a joyous, ramshackle version of “Prison Blues.” A little later, Stark delivers further on a delightful song called “U-Haul,” complete with a marvelous improvised rap over the tune’s run-out coda. Here, too, is the then-96-year-old Henry Townsend turning in a poignant “Tears Came Rollin’ Down.” Etta Baker, then 93, shows that age hadn’t slowed her as a guitarist at all as she delivers an elegant “Knoxville Rag.” Shepherd wisely stays in the background on cut after cut, allowing these amazing musical treasures to unfold naturally and without intrusive elements. There are absolutely no hotshot guitar histrionics anywhere on this disc, which speaks to Shepherd’s sincere vision for this project. He’s after the preservation of blues history with 10 Days Out, and as if to underscore that aim, five of the album’s participants (Neal Pattman, Cootie Stark, Gatemouth Brown, George “Wild Child” Butler, and… |

1000 Kilometers $16.98 Throughout their long existence, Oregon have consistently performed music that is difficult to categorize. Some of their acoustic ventures, particularly in the group’s earlier days, could be considered “world jazz” or “folk-jazz” due to the unusual instrumentation, avoidance of conventional blue notes, and original pieces. On 1000 Kilometers, there are times when the group actually sounds close to Weather Report in the 1970s, particularly when electronics and Paul McCandless’ soprano are utilized. But there are also performances that sound far from Weather Report, focusing on Ralph Towner’s acoustic guitar, McCandless’ other instruments, and the rhythm team of bassist Glen Moore and drummer Mark Walker. The music constantly keeps one guessing, and although McCandless is generally the lead voice in the ensembles, all four musicians make strong contributions. 1000 Kilometers is a fine effort from a unique band. The improvisation by Paul McCandless on the title track was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007 for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, and Mark Walker’s “Deep Six” was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |

12 Point Buck $14.98 Having carved out its own particular furrow of death by this point, destruction and tongue-piercing-cheek-wall black humor, on Twelve Point Buck Killdozer didn’t so much relax a bit as start to grind the wheels. There are some great moments, it has to be said, but for the most part they’re musical ones, as the band, especially Bill Hobson, start to stretch out in more directions than before. At the same time, the members can’t leave their sound too far behind them, and the result sometimes is a compromise. When Killdozer’s on, though, they’re on fire. “New Pants and Shirt” is actually a brilliant smashing together of huge noise, rhythm crunch, and psychedelic soloing, Hobson making his guitar as strung out as possible. The immediately following “Space 1999″ is just as incredible, Gerald’s drawling sleaze-Elvis, the queasy, stiff funk (if there is such a thing) of the music a stentorian crawl to the grave. Butch Vig at the very least makes everything sound as huge and crushing as all the band’s work has been in the past, but perhaps goes too over the top here — more variety would have helped in the end. Gerald sneaks in some sly literary references again, at the least — Flannery O’Connor is specifically name-checked on the horn-touched sort-of tribute “Lupus” — while the inclusion of a snippet of a farm report at one point seems like an all-too-appropriate touch. As for a song about Irwin Allen films called “Man Vs. Nature” that ruminates on the question of justice in a cold universe and how Charlton Heston is “just a ham” — well, why not? In another change, meanwhile, every song is an original — then again, the original single-only release of For Ladies Only from the previous year may well have killed their appetite for that at the time. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

1963 Isn’t 1962 $16.98 Bukka White was “rediscovered” — alive and well, despite rumors that he’d died a violent death sometime after his last official recording session in 1940 — by blues enthusiasts John Fahey and Ed Denson. These live tapes, made late that year by Fahey and Denson, were among the first tangible results of that rediscovery. This older cousin to B.B. King still had all of his stuff — he was only in his mid-50s, and unlike a lot of older bluesmen who were well past their primes for the ’60s blues revival, he could still play and sing up a storm. Indeed, he was playing faster and more precise in 1963 than he was in 1940, and his slide work shimmers and glistens throughout this CD, and the voice is superb as well. Opening with “Streamline Special,” he goes through a dazzling display of repertory, sounding like two or three players at once as he works the strings, playing lead and rhythm simultaneously on his acoustic guitar, in pieces running anywhere from a minute and a half to eight minutes or more. King has admitted trying to recreate White’s sound in his own electric playing, but these tapes show just how much of a losing battle that was, against this acoustic guitar virtuoso. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi |

1995 $16.98 This is a 2002 reissue of the original CD by guitar hero David “Fuze” Fiuczynski’s Screaming Headless Torsos quintet. Along with two previously unissued tracks (Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” and George Harrison’s “Something), this outing provides an early glimpse of one of the most powerful jazz-rock units to emerge in quite some time. On the other hand, perhaps the brand of music heard here could be akin to shock therapy treatment. Vocalist Dean Bowman adds a lot of character to this quintet as he raps, croons, and scats atop an assortment of high-octane pieces, consisting of funk motifs, jazzy progressions, and tricky time signatures. Dynamics abound, partly due to the rhythm section’s razor-sharp precision and seemingly impossible technical gymnastics. Fiuczynski leads the charge via his often slithery attack, marked by screeching crescendos, blazing single-note leads, and swiftly executed chord voicings. However, the group lowers the generally excitable proceedings down a notch or two during their soul-blues rendition of “Little Wing.” The band’s slightly in-your-face demeanor provides the knockout punch, yet it’s not all about aimless or frenzied chops fests. On this release, the musicians rise to the occasion amid 14 solid tracks that cover quite a bit of terrain. Recommended. ~ Glenn Astarita, Rovi |

2011 Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards $12.99 The 11 tracks by ten artists that make up this album of music associated with the Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards held in San Diego in 2011 would constitute a good hour on contemporary jazz radio, with station identification and commercials added. There are the usual covers of old pop hits, in this case Wayman Tisdale’s version of McFadden & Whitehead’s “Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now” and Steve Cole of the Guess Who’s “Undun.” There are a couple of vocal numbers with Jonathan Butler’s “Feels So Good” and Tisdale’s (again) “Sunshine.” And there are plenty of tunes in which a rhythm track supports an easygoing solo on a guitar or horn for four or five minutes before fading out. The exceptional tracks are the slightly left-of-center ones. L.A. Chillharmonic (a name that deserves an award in itself) presents “Checkin’ You Out,” which uses several different solo instruments. And, with the best saved for last, Kevin Eubanks’ seven-and-half-minute “Adoration” is a lovely duet between acoustic guitar and electric piano. That track might have been categorized as new age, and disc jockeys may be tempted to talk over it, but at least it demonstrates that the “contemporary jazz” category can hold more than one kind of music. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

Bass Drum

How can i create stage lighting for my band that goes along to the bass or kick drum?
I have no idea how the lighting that bands use which follows the bass or bass drum works. It is usually just flood lights but I want to know how they work and how to create these or (if inexpensive enough) buy some. But if there is a less-expensive way to create these lights that would be awesome.
Check this out http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Chauvet-Color-Bank-4Color-SoundActivated-Light?sku=803107 my band used 2 of these set off to the sides and you can adjust the sensitivity to change the colors with the bass or drums Rock On

…And Justice For All $11.98 This record has so much good material that it’s a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica’s most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. “One” is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more… |

2X45 $12.98 Collecting two separate sessions, one with Chris Watson and one without (the former also with guest drummer Alan Fish of fellow Sheffield experimentalists Hula), 2X45 shows the Cabs now well on their way to the perversely upbeat yet ominous funk of their early-’80s days. A song like “Breathe Deep” may have things like Richard H. Kirk’s sax and clarinet lines over the stripped-down polyrhythms of Alan Fish and Stephen Mallinder, yet the way Mallinder husks the vocals and the claustrophobic feel of the recording don’t entirely lend themselves to just going ahead and tearing the roof off the sucker. It’s a careful balance the Cabs maintain, but it does work more often than not, while the influence on later industrial-affiliated acts is immediately apparent. Watson’s work in the band at this point isn’t as noticeable as before, but the drop-in samples on “Yashar” of intense voices asking where all the people on earth are hiding give a sense of where he still turns up. The second session, with Nort and Eric Random on drums, guitar, and percussion, is a touch murkier at points but only just. “War of Nerves (T.E.S.)” may start with a tape of a guy talking about tortures involving rats and may have Mallinder’s distorted, demonic vocals in full effect, but the crisp rhythm punch is still predominant. “Wait and Shuffle” is even, dare it be said, perkier, with a brisk, reggae-touched drum and bass combination and some sprightly keyboards playing around with the sax wails and further found-sound oddities. The lengthy “Get out of My Face” concludes the session and release on perhaps the quirkiest note yet. Mallinder’s cryptic sloganeering peppers things throughout, but it’s Kirk’s intriguing guitar and the relentless but still somehow fun rhythm push which define the song best of all. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

BBC Live $18.98 Recorded live in the Summer of 1991 at London’s Town & Country Club, the Hux label’s BBC Live captures all of the volatility, humor, and wounded sarcasm that the Violent Femmes bring to each and every predictably unpredictable live show (bassist Brian Ritchie traditionally dictates the set list in real time). The group had just released Why Do Birds Sing?, a return to the snarky guitar/bass/snare drum attack that fueled their classic self-titled debut nearly ten years before, and were experiencing a bit of a comeback with “American Music” and its accompanying video. The crowd is rabid and knowledgeable, belting out each and every word, which makes for an interesting juxtaposition between the sentimental strains of “Good Feeling” and the murderous “Country Death Song.” The group’s ability to mix devout Christianity with sex, drugs, and rock & roll without seeming the least bit contrived has always been both a virtue and a hindrance. The Violent Femmes have always been a polarizing band, but you wouldn’t know it listening to a gaggle of British girls yell out “Jesus Walking on the Water” during the guitar intro to “Kiss Off.” Great stuff for longtime fans. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi |

Back & Gacked $4.99 With its cover artwork and title mimicking the classic AC/DC disc Back in Black, Gang Green completed their roaring late-’90s return to the hardcore punk scene on Back & Gacked. Joining band founder Chris Doherty (vocals and guitars) are musicians Walter Gustafson (various instruments), David Minehan, Michael Earls (guitar), and Matt Sandonato on bass. Musically, the band sticks to their furiously paced guitar and drum attack while the lyrics cover familiar territory without being completely dedicated to drinking Budweiser. Highlights include the feverish “Livin’ in Oblivion” and “You Tucked It to Me,” but each track on this 1998 release shares a speedy consistency, making Back & Gacked a surprisingly solid offering. More than a little older, but fundamentally (and musically) unchanged, Gang Green demonstrates on this disc that even after almost 20 years of bashing out hyper hardcore in the bars of Boston, they still have a few rounds left. ~ Vincent Jeffries, Rovi |

Backatown $14.99 Backatown, the Verve debut from New Orleans composer, bandleader, and trombone and trumpet boss Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, was one of the most hotly anticipated recordings of 2010. Given the well-deserved reputation Andrews and his Orleans Avenue band have for incendiary live performances, one had to wonder if it would translate in their studio offerings for independent labels. It didn’t because they’d never had the budget to get the vibe right. Backatown is the first time that Orleans Avenue — Dwayne “Big D” Williams (percussion), Mike Ballard (bass), Joey Peebles (drums), Pete Murano (guitar), and Dan Oestreicher (baritone sax) — have had an actual budget to capture the Trombone Shorty experience, and they’ve made a studio record that offers a real taste of the live show’s excitement. Shorty calls his music ? supafunkrock,? and it’s an accurate term for the aural gumbo on this fingerpopping, butt-shakin’ mix set. Produced by Galactic? s Ben Ellman, it contains 13 Shorty originals and an original interpretation of Allen Toussaint’s ? On Your Way Down,” on which Toussaint plays piano. The set is titled for a term used by residents of the Treme neighborhood in the city? s 6th Ward — the oldest black neighborhood in America. It definitely sounds like it was recorded in a proper recording studio (Number C and Shorty? s Gumbo Room in N.O.) but transcends those confines. It crackles and burns with an unburdened, unfettered, passionate live feel. Clocking in at 43 minutes, it opens with ? Hurricane Season.? It commences with a marching rhythm on snare and bass drum followed by Andrews playing a trumpet vamp. It kicks into dancing gear with one of the nastiest, funkiest basslines since Parliament’s ? Flash Light,? followed by horn vamps, big power chords, and drum kit breaks that are infectious. ? Quiet as Kept? combines Ballard? s bass with guest Charles Smith’s synthesized bassline, honking baritone sax, grimy distorted electric guitars a… |
