Partners Unite supports Gay Marriage Bill coming up for a vote in the New Year
November 18, 2009, New York – With the enthusiastic support of Governor Paterson, the gay marriage issue has been taken off of the back burner. It is back on the map, with rising momentum and is spreading quickly in our city streets. The gay community cheered and cried nervously, as the voting will take place some time before the New Year. This is definitely a great boost for the gay community and its supporters.
John Thompson a client representative from Partners Unite (www.partnersunite.com) – a gay dating service in New York was ecstatic when he heard the news, “This is a very exciting time for all of us. We are very strong supporters of equal rights, especially gay marriage here in New York.” However, with the tragic reversal in Maine still fresh in people’s minds, many can’t help but feel uncertain about the success of the new same-sex marriage bill.
“Sure, there are great expectations surrounding the gay marriage bill. But this hasn’t stopped us from fighting for our beliefs and continue our support for gay relationships.” explains John.
The delays on the new bill have continued throughout the year, now from November 10th until sometime before December 31st, indicating the precedence of other political agendas. Many people have pointed to the deficit reduction plan as standing in the way of the new gay marriage bill. But according to John, the gay community has remained optimistic. “From our experience, the gay community is confident about the future of equal rights. We’ve seen it first hand from the increasing number of gay men and women coming in to see us. Our members want to prove that gay relationships are real and here to stay no matter what.”
It’s only a matter of time until we see the success that every gay man and woman are hoping to achieve. The new gay marriage bill is giving new hope for equal rights and the needed change in our political system. As people count down the days, John suggests, “This year everyone should have a greater reason for celebrating the New Year.”

Some Kind of Wonderful (Special Collector’s Edition) $11.94 After dominating the teen-movie genre for the bulk of the 1980s, writer-producer (and sometimes director) John Hughes proved that he had at least one good movie left in him before squandering his talent on lame comedies throughout the 1990s. Like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful treated its teenaged characters like real people with real feelings, hopes, fears, and des… |

Mozart – Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) / Keenlyside, Roschmann, Hartmann, Damrau, Selig, Allen, Sir Colin Davis, Covent Garden $19.63 It’s hard to find a DVD version of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte that’s as well sung as this 2003 Covent Garden production. Led by the eminent Mozartian, Sir Colin Davis, orchestra and singers present a warm, often intense vision of the opera, not as the fairy tale it’s often taken for, but as a human drama of the passage from misguided beliefs to mature knowledge of self. Diana Damrau is the Queen o… |

Birthday Blues $13.98 It’s no accident that Jansch’s 1969 album sounds like a modified version of the Pentangle. He was a member of the great British folk-rock group at the time of this album’s release, which was produced by Shel Talmy (who also worked with the Pentangle). And he’s backed by the group’s sterling rhythm section of Danny Thompson (bass) and Terry Cox (drums), with occasional touches of harmonica (played by British blues singer Duffy Power), alto sax, and flute. The effect is akin to hearing an unbalanced Pentangle, with no John Renbourn on dueling guitar or Jacqui McShee on vocals. That’s not at all a bad thing — Jansch was one of the group’s main motors, and can still be a compelling writer and performer on his own. All of the cuts on this LP are originals, showing the artist leaning a little more toward bluesy styles than usual, though the mood is predominantly British folk. It’s a pleasant effort, but not his best work, either as a solo performer or within a group context. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Bryter Layter $10.99 With even more of the Fairport Convention crew helping him out — including bassist Dave Pegg and drummer Dave Mattacks along with, again, a bit of help from Richard Thompson — as well as John Cale and a variety of others, Drake tackled another excellent selection of songs on his second album. Demonstrating the abilities shown on Five Leaves Left didn’t consist of a fluke, Bryter Layter featured another set of exquisitely arranged and performed tunes, with producer Joe Boyd and orchestrator Robert Kirby reprising their roles from the earlier release. Starting with the elegant instrumental “Introduction,” as lovely a mood-setting piece as one would want, Bryter Layter indulges in a more playful sound at many points, showing that Drake was far from being a constant king of depression. While his performances remain generally low-key and his voice quietly passionate, the arrangements and surrounding musicians add a considerable amount of pep, as on the jazzy groove of the lengthy “Poor Boy.” The argument could be made that this contravenes the spirit of Drake’s work, but it feels more like a calmer equivalent to the genre-sliding experiments of Van Morrison at around the same time. Numbers that retain a softer approach, like “At the Chime of a City Clock,” still possess a gentle drive to them. Cale’s additions unsurprisingly favor the classically trained side of his personality, with particularly brilliant results on “Northern Sky.” As his performances on keyboards and celeste help set the atmosphere, Drake reaches for a perfectly artful reflection on loss and loneliness and succeeds wonderfully. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

Bunkka $13.96 Oakenfold a producer? Well, he may not release much other than mix albums (exceptions being the Swordfish soundtrack and scattered singles), but Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne once formed one of the most highly touted remixing teams in dance music — though Perfecto is now known to British teenagers strictly as a label, not a sound aesthetic. So when a man who’s not only the biggest DJ on earth but the producer of one of the greatest LPs of the ’90s (Happy Mondays’ Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches) finally decides to turn in a full production LP, notice must be paid. Unfortunately, Oakenfold isn’t much of a pioneer any more, and though it’s clear his ear for a solid production hasn’t deserted him, Bunkka sees him following the trends instead of pushing them. With a new partner, Andy Gray, Oakenfold shows often that he has the production gloss all taken care of, but track after track here tries, and fails, to capitalize on a familiar sound or a style, from stylish big-beat pastiche (“Ready Steady Go”) to robotic experimentalism ? la Radiohead (“Motion,” with Grant Lee Phillips) to evocative female singer/songwriter electronica (“Southern Sun,” “Hypnotised,” “Hold Your Hand”). A pair of hip-hop tracks, the sublime “Starry-Eyed Surprise” and Ice Cube’s hardcore “Get Em Up,” are great productions, but “Zoo York” and the Hunter S. Thompson spoken-word feature “Nixon’s Spirit” are potted examples of the very blandest ethnic fusion. With so much attention being paid to the production, the songs, unfortunately, just can’t compete. ~ John Bush, Rovi |

Death Walks Behind You $22.99 Devil’s Answer” might be the record for which Atomic Rooster are remembered, but it was their second album that posted warning that they were on the verge of creating something dazzling — simply because the record itself is a thing of almost freakish beauty. With only organist Vincent Crane surviving from the original lineup, and John Du Cann coming in to relieve him of some of the songwriting duties, Death Walks Behind You opens at a gallop and closes with a sprint. The title track is effectively spooky enough for any Hammer horror aficionado, all descending pianos and Psycho-screaming guitars, while “Gershatzer,” a duet for organ and percussion, proves that new drummer Paul Hammond is more than a match for the departed Carl Palmer. It’s in between these dramatic bookends, however, that Rooster truly peak, with the stately “VUG,” the pensive “Nobody Else,” and the truly amazing “Tomorrow Night” (one of the scariest love songs ever let loose on the U.K. chart) all impressing. Crane’s liner notes, incidentally, remind us that the album packed a different version of the hit, with an extended ending that descends into unimagined chaos — a shocker for the pop kids, perhaps, but a fabulous bridge into the succeeding “7 Streets.” Possibly the best evidence for this being Atomic Rooster’s masterpiece, however, comes not simply from what’s on the album, but for what has been left off. An excellent repackaging and remastering job restores the original artwork in all its gatefold glory, but you’ll search in vain for bonus tracks — not because there were none to add, but because they simply wouldn’t fit. Sit through Death Walks Behind You, after all, and you really won’t need any more surprises. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi |

Dennis the Menace [10th Anniversary] $6.99 John Hughes continues the trend he began with the Home Alone series in Dennis the Menace, the Hughes-scripted film version of Hank Ketcham’s long-running comic strip, cartoon show, and television comedy. The film opens as Dennis (Mason Gamble) is seen careening down a sidewalk in a beautiful and idealistic suburban town on his training-wheeled bike — cans on string clattering behind him, baseball cards flapping in the spokes of the wheel, his red wagon filled to the brim and his dog following him. “Hey! Mister Wilson!” he screams and slams his bike to a halt in front of his much put-upon neighbor, Mr. Wilson (Walter Matthau). Half of the film concerns vignettes of small-town Hank Ketcham life as Dennis’ mom Alice (Lea Thompson) starts a new job, Dennis stays over at his friend Margaret’s (Amy Sakasitz) house, and Mr. Wilson and his gentle, well-meaning wife, Martha (Joan Plowright), mind Dennis during the night of a big garden party. Through all this, Dennis continually gets into Mr. Wilson’s hair. But then the Home Alone plot kicks in — with an unsubtle dose of O. Henry — when Switchblade Sam (Christopher Lloyd) makes an appearance. Switchblade Sam is a homeless drifter who combs the neighborhood stealing purses and small home items. But when Switchblade Sam steals Mr. Wilson’s collection of gold coins, Dennis comes to the rescue and inflicts Dennis the Menace-type tortures upon the thief in order to reclaim the coins for Mr. Wilson. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

Give Me a Sad Song $19.98 A follow-up to Dreams Fly Away, Give Me a Sad Song is a compilation of rarities and previously unreleased material spanning the years 1970-1986. As its title suggests, it is a melting pot of grievous tales whose poignancies are revealed by Thompson’s ever-emotive vocals. Of particular note is a chilling performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Story of Isaac,” taken from a pre-Richard 1970 session with Martin Carthy on guitar. Five tracks are taken from this set of demos for Tangent records and also include David Ackles’ mournful “Down River” and a sparse version of Lennon/McCartney’s “Get Back.” Ironically, some of the album’s best tracks are mid-’80s collaborations between Thompson and Betsy Cook, when Thompson’s career had fallen into relative obscurity. As is typical of the period, too-glossy production values tend to mar the songs’ elegance and simplicity. The album finishes with a sublime rendition of John Prine’s “Aimless Love.” ~ Travis Drageset, Rovi |

|
Spirit of the Century $14.98 From start to finish this album defies categorical classification. It employs the best of R&B, Afro-beat, folk, and blues while remaining true to the Blind Boys’ gospel roots. And with a tasteful selection of material by Tom Waits, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and Ben Harper, in addition to their usual array of traditional gospel hymns and folk tunes, it will appeal to generations of listeners. Though varied in its stylings, the album works as a whole due to the high-quality production, arrangements, and musicianship throughout. The traditional “No More,” in a slow and soulful arrangement, starts off with a plaintive slide guitar sampling of “Amazing Grace” and sits comfortably beside “Run for a Long Time,” which features George Scott rapping over a percussive, groove-filled (? la Danny Thompson on double bass) and harmony- laden reworking of this classic. And the Stones’ “Just Wanna See His Face,” which is given a jubilee-like treatment that rivals the original, follows up a somber “Motherless Child” with grace and acuity. Other guests include Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, John Hammond on guitar and Dobro, and David Lindley on oud and electric slide. ~ Travis Drageset, Rovi |

The Celluloid Collection $12.95 This two-disc collection from the ’80s/’90s alternative rock outfit features 24 tracks culled from the band? s most prolific period. Led by drummer Anton Fier and featuring a rotating ensemble of stars that included Michael Stipe (? Boy [Go]? ), Richard Thompson (? True? ), John Zorn (? Under the Cap? ), John Lydon (? The Animal Speaks? ), Syd Straw (? Brides of Jesus? ), Jack Bruce (? Working Harder? ), and more, The Celluloid Collection offers up a solid career overview for longtime fans and newcomers alike. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi |

The Soul Sessions $15.98 Q: She’s 16 and British, what can she possibly know about singing vintage American soul music? A: Enough to make you squirm, get off your ass, and dance close with anybody who’ll have you. Joss Stone is a young woman who, if you believe the story, was about to record her wannabe pop smash debut and then be well on her way to becoming the next Britney/Christina. Then she heard some vintage American Miami soul made by the likes of Latimore, Little Beaver, Betty Wright, Timmy Thomas, and the like, and genuine inspiration took hold. The result of all this career changing (or diva postponement) is The Soul Sessions, a collection of ten badass soul classics recorded with all of the above folks — soul princess Betty Wright and S-Curve’s Steve Greenberg produced almost all of it in Miami, though a pair of tracks were recorded in New York with R&B wunderkind Mike Mangini and a souled-out cover of the White Stripes “Fell in Love With a Boy,” guided by the Roots’ ?uestlove (Ahmir Thompson) on the modern tip, was cut in Philly. These jams drip honey sweet and hard with tough, sexy soul, and Stone’s voice is larger than life. It’s true she’s been tutored and mentored by Wright and her musical collaborators in the science of groove, but she keeps it raw enough to be real. Her reading of Harlan Howard’s “The Chokin’ Kind” reveals that it should have been an R&B tune all along — check out Little Beaver’s (Willie Hale) guitar solo. Her reading of Bobby Miller’s “Dirty Man,” a track associated with Wright, is gutsy and completely believable, and the interplay between Latimore’s piano and Beaver’s funky, shimmering guitaristry brings Stone’s vocal down to street level. For a woman as young as Stone to tackle Carla Thomas’ “I’ve Fallen in Love With You” and Aretha Franklin’s “All the King’s Horses,” not to mention John Ellison’s nugget “Some Kind of Wonderful,” takes guts, chops, or a genuine delusional personality to pull off. Stone has the former two. She has unique … |

USED: Alleged [Blu-ray] $17.99 An ambitious and talented small town reporter struggles to balance morality with career ambition while covering the so-called “Scopes Monkey Trial” that took the theory of evolution into the courtroom in 1925.His father the founder of a respected Tennessee newspaper, journalist Charles Anderson (Nathan West) is constantly on the hunt for the story that will make him famous. When high school science teacher John Scopes is accused of violating the state’s Butler Act, which strictly prohibited the teaching of Evolution Theory in public classrooms, staunch anti-Darwinist William Jennings Bryan (Fred Dalton Thompson) and famed Defense Attorney Clarence Darrow (Brian Dennehy) each begin preparations for a complicated – and controversial – trial. But as the case gets under way and the media frenzy begins, Baltimore Sun editor H. L. Mencken (Colm Meaney) convinces Charles that it’s sensationalism – not facts – that sells newspapers. With his fianc? e Rose (Ashley Johnson) increasingly opposed to his reporting of the “facts,” Charles reaches a crucial impasse at which he must weigh his beliefs and personal relationships against his growing appetite for fame and recognition. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |
