127 Rose Avenue $14.99 Released in June of 2009, the first single from Hank Williams, Jr.’s 127 Rose Avenue is called “Red, White & Pink Slip Blues,” a paean to the economic uncertainty of 21st century recession America. It’s like a lot of contemporary country singles these days, anthemic truth tales reflecting the concerns of the common (wo)man, who is struggling to find his/her place in a country that seems to have packed itself up and left them behind. The single was a hit and may carry the album to the higher rungs of the charts with it. That said, this has nothing to do with the actual quality of the music. In many ways, Williams has been remaking the same record since the early 1980s. It has his seamless blend of loud Southern rock-style guitars, rowdy, rebellious lyrics, hell-raising drums, and fist-pumping choruses, with a ballad or two thrown in for good measure. It’s a formula, but one that has worked to keep Williams with Curb Records and on the charts for nearly 30 years. No matter what the trend in the music itself, from the Urban Cowboy days on, Williams has remained in style remarkably enough because his songwriting reflects the timeless concerns of country fans. He first took up the heady electric guitar sound in the late ’70s and perfected it in the early ’80s. 127 Rose Avenue changes the production style to reflect what’s going on in contemporary country — big compressed guitars, melds of fiddles and banjos, and rock & roll drum kits. The other notable tracks on this set are the loud and proud, self-penned, “Farm Song” with a guest appearance by pedal steel guitar icon Robert Randolph; “All the Roads,” a duet with the Grascals, and, as is usual on a Hank Jr. record, an homage to his father called the “The Last Driftin’ Cowboy,” with a sample from “Honky Tonk Blues,.” If you dig Bocephus’ countless previous albums and/or are a fan of the new brand of Nashville rock that calls itself “contemporary country,” you’ll dig this. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

13 Japanese Birds, Vol. 8: Kokuchov $18.98 Kokuchov is Merzbow’s eighth volume in the 13 Japanese Birds series, a collection of recordings that underscores his commitment to the natural world and pays tribute to the influence of French composer Olivier Messiaen, whose own tribute to fowl accounts for a valued piece of 20th century classical music known as Catalogue d’Oiseaux. On Kokuchov (nicknamed for a black swan), Masami Akita (Merzbow) returns to his drum kit. He is a formidable drummer, to say the very least; an utterly creative musician, he can play forms as well as visionary improvisations. He employs the drums generously against and in concert with his power electronics. This is especially true on ? Black Swan,? and on the album? s closing track ? Ushiwaka 2.? The latter of these showcases a series of repetitive rhythms slowly evolving as other sounds, from sampled guitar drones and reverb to industrial sounds, are gradually folded in, creating an uncharacteristic set of dynamics that is somewhat less punishing than some of his other pieces. ? Mesmerism,? opens the set with a series of pulsing, gated keyboard sounds that are hopelessly distorted, as drums punctuate the end of every line. As the piece develops, more keyboards are layered on top and folded in, creating a body of sounds that is not unlike what it might be like to hear Martin Rev play with Loop live! Guitar sounds shift in and out of the keyboard racket, drums fill what little space there is and force the rhythmic pulse forward into oblivion. None of the records in this series are dismissable, but Kokuchov ranks among the most diverse and musically compelling in the entire series. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra-Capsular Extraction $13.98 The 55 minutes of music contained on A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra-Capsular Extraction are the sum of Earth’s very first recording sessions at Smegma Studios in 1990. The band consisted of guitarist Dylan Carlson and bassists Dave Harwell and Joe Preston (the latter also played an Alesis HR-16 drum machine). Two guests vocalists — Kelly Canary and Kurt Cobain — helped out on the eight-track sessions. Sub Pop released part of the album as a 35-minute, three-track EP called Extra-Capsular Extraction. The three cuts were titled “Eye Surgery,” “Concepts,” and “Problems.” The rest of the material was shelved, as Earth began working on Earth 2, but the masters were allegedly stolen and unofficially released as a series of bootleg singles. They were also compiled on Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. This Southern Lord-issued set marks the first time that the complete sessions have been assembled on one official release, totaling over 55 minutes. Here, the originally issued tracks have been renamed as the two-part “A Bureaucratic Desire for Revenge” (in Carlson’s response to the rest having been stolen and released without his consent) and “Problems” re-titled “Ouroboros Is Broken.” The remaining four cuts, “Geometry of Murder,” “German Dental Work,” “Divine and Bright,” and “Dissolution 1″ fill out the set. Heard as a whole, this set doesn’t sound nostalgic but revelatory, for the simple fact that its slow, deliberately restrained brutality is not only engaging, but hypnotic, doom-laden, serpentine, even beautiful. (The chugging midtempo uber-heavy riffing on “Geometry of Murder” is a shock to the system after the sludge of the first three cuts.) Not only is it not difficult to make it through the entire experience, but it’s nearly impossible not to. It’s true that Earth became more aggressive on Earth 2, but here, the plod, drone, and feedback are nearly narcotic in their downtuned effect, full of unwavering strength and focus. For those who don’… |

A Heap of Broken Images $16.98 Generally, when a group releases an instrumental and a vocal record simultaneously, it’s the latter that is better appreciated by a larger number of fans. The instrumental selection may get occasional late-night play by a few aspiring DJs, but for the most part it rests untouched inside the case or the sleeve, all but forgotten. However, for production duo Blue Sky Black Death’s debut, A Heap of Broken Images, it is the second disc, the one that features lyrical appearances from Jus Allah, Guru, and Virtuoso, among others, that runs the greater risk of being ignored. Not because it’s a bad collection; it’s just so greatly outshined by the instrumentals. Actually, the term instrumentals is a little deceptive. Kingston and Young God do include spoken vocal samples as well as live singing into their 12-song set, which, added to the guitars, pianos, trumpets, strings, woodwinds, and bass they mix with their drum loops and keyboards, create a fairly stunning effect. It’s lush and harmonious, sprawling through different watery landscapes and ideas, yet there’s a constant undercurrent of pain and isolation that pervades even the less ominous tracks. “Days Are Years” begins with vaguely cacophonous layers that spread out into guitar-led fluvial meanderings, finally ending in a quasi pop song with a “Leaving Las Vegas” bass and repeating vocal line; “Not Here,” with its opening trumpet and piano riff, takes on a darker, more trip-hop feel, and though its jazzy break tries to convince its audience that perhaps there’s a bit of light underneath the murky scum of the pond, as an empty drum loop and forlorn guitar finally bring it to a finish, the realization that the surface is actually very far away suddenly becomes quite clear. It’s depressing, yet the music is so intriguing it’s impossible to stop listenining and to stop looking. Because Blue Sky Black Death prove themselves quite adept at creating descriptive, unique environments on A Heap of Broken Images’ first d… |

A Show of Hands $13.95 Although keyboards dominated Rush’s 1988 double live set A Show of Hands, it’s a definite improvement over its somewhat flat predecessor, 1981 ‘s Exit…Stage Left. The band’s music isn’t as hard rock-based as it previously was, evidenced by the more modern-sounding compositions selected for this third live album (the first Rush album to be produced completely by the band). The only tracks from the pre-1982 period to be featured are “Closer to the Heart,” which is expanded to include a jamming section at the end, and the spooky “Witch Hunt,” originally from 1981′s Moving Pictures. The remainder of the album’s track list is comprised of Rush’s best compositions from 1982-1987, such as “Subdivisions,” “Distant Early Warning,” “Force Ten,” “Time Stand Still,” and “Red Sector A,” as well as several tracks that have been forgotten over time (“Marathon,” “Turn the Page,” “Mission,” etc.). Also featured for the first time on a live Rush album is a completely unaccompanied drum solo by Neil Peart — the intricate “Rhythm Method.” The inspired A Show of Hands is an excellent snapshot of Rush in concert during the mid- to late ’80s. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi |

Agent Orange $16.98 Sodom’s fans have argued to the teeth about whether 1987′s Persecution Mania or 1989′s Agent Orange is the German metal act’s definitive record. Both stand right at the devil’s crossroads of thrash and death metal, and both are brutally furious assaults on the senses. That said, the case can be made for Agent Orange being slightly superior for two reasons: first, the production on this set is better, hands down, thanks in large part to Harris Johns. The band had a bigger budget and was able to, with him at the helm, use exactly the same elements to make the sound fuller, heavier, and more punishing — especially in the drum mix, which is just sheer blastbeat menace. The second reason is that given that this was the second album by the trio of bassist/vocalist Tom Angelripper, guitarist Frank Blackfire, and drummer Chris Witchhunter, there was a long period of live touring between records which cemented their relationship as a band. The songwriting is tighter, the dynamics more elaborate, and everyone carries equal weight — it would be the very last time this would happen with Sodom on record. Stand-out tracks here include the anti-bullfighting anthem “Exhibition Bout,” the in-the-red speed rage of “Incest,” and the exquisitely assaultive riffing in “Baptism of Fire.” [In 2010, SPV/Steamhammer remastered and reissued Agent Orange on CD and LP. The CD edition contains a bonus disc that includes six live versions of album tracks. The most to notable is a live "Incest," which was the B-side of the "Ausgebombt" single (included here in the original German version as the disc closer). "Agent Orange" and "Tired and Red" appeared on the live album Marooned, and "Remember the Fallen" and the live "Ausgebompt" were part of One Night in Bangkok. Also included is a new booklet with a liner essay by Angelripper.]~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |
